Ephesians 1:17
Ever had to read directions to put something together? Did you actually read every step? Or did you go for it and then wonder...why do I have so many pieces left? No? Uh...me neither...
Let's face it: we have all opened our Bibles, read something, and the words sometimes just don't stick. This verse is a good reminder about how we have to let God open the eyes of our hearts so He can show us wisdom. He can also show us wisdom and prayer or service to Him and Him through us. I find when I allow His wisdom to flow through me, I gain more knowledge of Him. However, I have to let him reveal Himself; I can't do it. Ways I have found this are through studying or reading other comments on the verse or through prayer and service.
There is so much to learn. Take a hobby or job, and you have to do some of the same things. Michael Jordan got cut from his basketball team in High School but went on to become one who many believe is the best athlete in basketball, period. But he had to study, train, and mentally prepare himself.
Similarly, we must have the same attitude and passion when seeking God, and the wisdom we will gain from doing so is reward enough. I also think it's cool how Paul says in verse 18 "the eyes of your understanding." Remember Paul was blinded physically...Paul then let Christ guide Him spiritually. I once wrote a note about how sometimes we need to put our blinders on like they do horses. Then we can let God open the eyes of our hearts so we can see mercy, grace and compassion.
