Labor
Colossians 3:23
It can be difficult can't it? Work is not always fun and enjoyable. We sometimes hate it even. We look for better opportunities or just try to make it to the weekend. We are all thankful when the weekend comes. It's been a long week. Thank God for Friday. Often times in our jobs, life, churches, etc. we work and labor to please others. However, our first duty should be working for our Lord. How can I work for the Lord in my job? I'm not a pastor, or minister. In all things we do we can be working for the Lord. In whatever we do we must give it all we got. We can't please everyone. However, if we are working for our Lord, if we are working with full hearts, and giving it our all for our Lord, then He will be pleased. Our work must start with Him first. Our attitudes, actions, thoughts, our minds, and what is in our heart. How can we be His hands and feet if we are not working for Him. We all have worked, are working, or will work a job that has it's challenges. There are times you just want to quit because it seems you can't do anything to please your boss. Work for God first in ALL things. Not just your job. Working for God can happen anywhere and anybody. It can be with your spouse, your children, your family, your friends, your co-workers, your church family, etc. In all things we do we should do it for God's glory and honor and let it be for Him. How can we minister to others if we are not first working for our Lord? He chose and loved us first. Shouldn't we do the same for Him? I'm thankful that I get Monday off don't doubt that for a minute. However, I know I need to work more diligently for Him in all things of my life. I encourage you to evaluate your hearts, and minds this week and let our Lord work through you and give it all to Him.

Silence
Psalm 32:3
I will confess...I have remained silent. There have been times when I did not confess my sins as I needed. I have also have asked forgiveness at times but with a heart not seeking or fully asking forgiveness. Then there have been times when I have bowed my head and prayed asking and seeking forgiveness and felt relieved afterwards. We may not always realize it, but sometimes are sins weigh on our hearts and minds and it affects our vision and separates us from God. How is that possible? If we are carrying sin in us it can affect us in many ways. It may even affect others around us. If we continue to read this Psalm we see that David does confess his sins. It seems confessing our sins is difficult for us at times. I think we all believe we are good and decent people. However, we have to eliminate pride. We can't just keep silent when it comes to confessing sins. I try to at least once everyday ask forgiveness for my sins. I know I could be more intentional at times. I know we all sin. I know I sin. I know I need forgiveness. Let us continue to confess. I also believe in accountability not just to God, but to our spouse, family, friends, or someone else we can go and confess our sins. Not so they will judge us, but that they can join us in prayer. They can encourage you and check in on you. What is in your heart that needs confessing? Don't let it consume you and affect your vision of Christ.

Complacency
Aug . 29th
Amos 6:1 and other verses
A.W. Tower says "Complacency is a deadly foe of all spiritual growth. "
How often do we fall into complacency?
We often settle for the norm.
Complacency can be defined as "a feeling of quiet pleasure of security, often unaware of potential danger. Self satisfaction or smug satisfaction with an existing situation."
Complacency can ruin our passion for God. We go from God satisfied life to a self sufficient one. Sometimes we believe we are spiritual enough. It leads us to think all is well with our heart. Sometimes we let things like praying, reading the bible, and attending church become rituals or habits. We don't do it out of passion for God and His kingdom.
Other times we fall into temptation that may not be considered bad. We let good things take precedence over our passion for God. When good earthly pleasures become our priority and pursuit our mind and heart is filled for material things.
Sometimes being complacent blinds us from seeing other peoples pain. Our heart becomes complacent and is not moved for others.
If we honestly examine our hearts, don't you think we fall into complacency?
Don't you think we are self-sufficient in our life? Lack compassion?
Don't you think we need revival?
We need a spiritual awakening.
Let us keep seeking. Let us keep growing. Lord help us to move toward you everyday. Lord help us to not be satisfied in our selfish needs. Let us not be satisfied in staying still. Lord help us to seek you. To grow in you. To be completely satisfied in you. To depend on you. To honor and glorify you, Lord.
You are our security. Our salvation.

Prayer
No blog today. Just needed prayers. If you read this could you please lift up Theresa and Aaron Kenagy. Thanks!!
Self-Control
Again many verses
I have tried to write on this topic a few different times without much luck. Maybe because I know at times I still struggle with self-control. I looked up definitions and I read many verses. I read some commentaries over those verses. I could not really find what I was looking for or how I wanted to word it. Then after much reading and searching I came across this from John Piper.
"The very concept of "self-control" implies a battle between a divided self. It implies that our "self" produces desires we should not satisfy but instead "control." We should "deny ourselves" and "take up our cross daily," Jesus says, and follow him (Luke 9:23). Daily our "self" produces desires that should be "denied" or "controlled."
That path that leads to heaven is narrow and strewn with suicidal temptations to abandon the way. Therefore Jesus says, "Strive to enter through the narrow door" (Luke 13:24). The Greek word for "strive" is agonizesthe, in which you correctly hear the English word "agonize."
We get a taste of what is involved from Matthew 5:29, "If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you." This is the fierceness of self-control. This is what is behind the words of Jesus in Matthew 11:12, "The kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and violent men take it by force." Are you laying hold on the kingdom fiercely?
Paul says that Christians exercise self-control like the Greek athletes, only our goal is eternal, not temporal. "Everyone who competes in the games (agonizomenos) exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable" (1 Corinthians 9:25). So he says, "I pommel my body and subdue it" (1 Corinthians 9:27). Self-control is saying no to sinful desires, even when it hurts.
But the Christian way of self-control is NOT "Just say no!" The problem is with the word "just." You don't just say no. You say no in a certain way: You say no by faith in the superior power and pleasure of Christ. It is just as ruthless. And may be just as painful. But the difference between worldly self-control and godly self-control is crucial. Who will get the glory for victory? That's the issue. Will we get the glory? Or will Christ get the glory? If we exercise self-control by faith in Christ's superior power and pleasure, Christ will get the glory.
Fundamental to the Christian view of self-control is that it is a gift. It is the fruit of the Holy Spirit: "The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace . . . self-control" (Galatians 5:22). How do we "strive" against the our fatal desires? Paul answers: "I labor, striving (agonizomenos) according to His power, which mightily works within me" (Colossians 1:29). He "agonizes" by the power of Christ not his own. Similarly he tells us, "If by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body you will live" (Romans 8:13). "Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the LORD of hosts" (Zechariah 4:6). We must be fierce! Yes. But not by our might. "The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the LORD" (Proverbs 21:31).
And how does the Spirit produce this fruit of self-control in us? By instructing us in the superior preciousness of grace, and enabling us to see and savor (that is, "trust") all that God is for us in Jesus. "The grace of God has appeared . . . instructing us to deny . . . worldly desires . . . in the present age" (Titus 2:11). When we really see and believe what God is for us by grace through Jesus Christ, the power of wrong desires is broken. Therefore the fight for self-control is a fight of faith. "Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called" (1 Timothy 6:12).
I don't agree with everything with what John Piper says, but I think he explains self-control through Christ better then I can. Maybe I struggle with the word self-control because the word self is in it. When we can eliminate our self from the equation and let the power of Christ take over we can control our self.

Walk
Just do a basic search of walk or walking and you will find many verses.
If you have read all my blogs up to this point then you know I have been on a journey to lose some weight. I have been eating a little better and trying to mix in some walks. August in Texas is a very hard month to get out and go walk. Even after 9 it is still hot. Yesterday morning it was already in the 80's. However, I know if I really want to improve my health and weight, I have to get out there and exercise. The same can be said about our spiritual walk as well. In order for us to grow and to continue to grow in Christ we must get up and go walk with him. I don't mean that in a literal way, but I guess you can actually go physically walk and have a spiritual walk at the same time. Most of us have an ipod or phone that can play music. You can even put sermons or bible reading on your devices. I have a list of some of my favorite Christian songs. Some are upbeat, and some are encouraging, and some just help me realize how awesome our God is. When we accept Christ are journey doesn't just stop. We must continue seeking, studying, reading, listening, worshiping, serving, loving, and growing. Just as we want to improve our physical bodies. We must improve our spiritual mind and heart. So I encourage you to walk with Christ today, and everyday. I can tell you the growth and knowledge you gain is far more important then the physical gains.

Impossible
multiple verses
Monday...a new start to the week for most of us. Where we get up and face a new week and a new day. Some days bring challenges and trials. Some days bring miracles and answered prayers. You ever just look around and see the many great things we get to see or do? We are definitely blessed.
I look back on my life at all the things that God helped me overcome. Graduating high school - impossible, college - impossible, masters degree - impossible. Only through His power and grace did I make it through each step. I can tell you right now it was not on my own power. School was always a hard subject for me. I was bullied - yes you heard me right - all 6ft 8 of me...I mean I wasn't always that tall.
Even before then with my mom. She wasn't supposed to have children, and here I am. We can look in the Bible and see that everything was made possible by God and through his son, Jesus. Stories like David beating Goliath, Paul being blinded and going through many different trials. Or how about God raising His son from the grave 3 days later? Impossible? That word doesn't exist to God. Nothing is impossible if we let God work through us.

Weight
Hebrews 12:1
In looking at this verse, I found there could be many things that could weigh us down. It also isn't just saying sin weighs us down. Sin, burdens, anything that is a hindrance in our walk with Christ. Maybe that is TV, or food, or selfish desires. Maybe that is an addiction we can't defeat, or a behavior. It could be our actions or attitudes. Lots of things can weigh us down, and we usually let them weigh us down. It could be the way we live, manage our finances, families, or employment.
We are constantly fighting an uphill battle it seems. We must strive to look past these issues or problems. We must continue to seek Jesus and ask for His strength and power to overcome them. We can not defeat them alone. However, we are constantly trying to "man up" and show our strength. We are nothing without the strength of Christ. Trying to man up is relying on our abilities and not God's. What weights are holding you back? Give them to Christ. I know I make it sound like an easy process. I know it is not. I let weights hold me down and hurt my walk. I know I can't rely on my selfish desires or strength. Let us strive to seek Christ.

Faith
James 1:2-4
You ever run across some verses and think to yourself, "How is that possible?" "Consider it pure joy when faced with a trial" can leave a person wondering what that really means. I think if we are honest, we really don't want to face trials in our life. I wouldn't say we consider them joyful or fun. Some would say that is how you get faith - through trials. I think we have to be careful with that line of thinking. Faith is tested by trials. If trials don't produce faith, then what does?
Well we can look in Romans 10:17 "So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." So trials don't produce faith. Trials, when received with faith, produce patience. James is pointing to the end of the trial. When we come face to face with something difficult in our lives, we often can't see around the corner or past it. We let it consume us. We let it affect our faith and our ways of thinking. It can take our focus off what is really important.
The joy in trials comes in the end. Like in a movie when the hero saves the day or the good overcomes evil. We must lay hold of this truth that a loving Father allows (sometimes sends) trials in our lives, not to impair us but to improve us. Not to destroy us, but to develop us. In other words, our Father wants to develop our character, not destroy it. This can only happen if we have faith. We can't wait for the trial and try to believe. We must be rooted in faith so that when trials come, we can hold on to that faith and persevere - while focusing on Christ.
Remember the story about when Jesus walked on water? Leading up to that, the disciples had gone out and were caught in a trial/storm. The problem that night wasn't the storm. It was the faith inside of them. Even after Jesus told Peter to step out on the water, he lost focus and started sinking. We must strive to focus on Christ and have faith that He will overcome any trial we face. Christ won victory over all our trials when He went to the cross.

21 day challenge

Model Prayer
Matthew 6:5-7
Yes. Lots of these devos have covered prayer. I still take prayer for granted. We have the opportunity to talk to God...Daily...In the morning, before meals, before bedtime. Prayer doesn't need an audience. Prayer should come from the heart and shouldn't be just a time to ask for our needs and wants but also a time to praise him, to thank him, to glorify his name. We don't need to pray to look good in front of others. Prayer is not a errand in our everyday life. Prayer comes from our hearts when our mind is focused on him and Him only.
Fall to our knees
I have recently felt a little convicted about how much honor and praise I give our Lord. I also found myself trying to remember the last time I fell to my knees or even prayed on my knees. We can read about Daniel in Daniel 6:10 where he got down on his knees 3 times a day and prayed. When I'm on my knees, I feel like I'm truly engaged in prayer and thought. No distraction of a comfy bed or a plate of food in front of me. I heard a quote that says "I am tall on my knees."
In the Bible, we can see people bowing or stooping down to honor a King. In other cultures, they bow as a sign of respect and honor. Let us stand tall on our knees and show our Lord honor, respect, admiration, love, praise and thanksgiving. For we owe it all to Him our King.
Peace
I'm thankful for peace from and in Christ. When I read His word, I find peace. When I pray, I find peace. When I serve and obey, I find peace. When I give Him control, I find peace. Nothing else on earth grants me peace like Christ. Let us seek Him and His peace in all things. Have a great day and week.
Believe it
Matthew 21:22
Distractions
However, I know I need my time with Christ, just as Mary did. We all have to find time to make it a priority. For me, it has been doing this devo challenge. I know I can be better at what time I do it or how I do it. But I enjoy my time with Him. I know we can get really busy sometimes or not use our time wisely. I pray that He will continue to grow me and draw me and you near Him each and every day. That is what He desires. If we are not sitting down with Him, then how can we effectively minister to others when we are spiritually dry and empty?
Faith no matter what
I really like this passage. Here you have a woman who has been bleeding for 12 years. She had seen every doctor possible. When seeing Jesus, she had faith that he was the ultimate healer and that if she could just touch his robe, she would healed. There will be times in our life where we await an answer or a change. In those times, we must continue to lean on Christ. Miracles and answered prayers happen everyday. Sometimes, we have to wait for an answer, and sometimes, we feel let down by those answers. We must continue to believe it is being worked out for our good.
Nothing to add
Psalm 103
I have nothing to add to today's devo. Try to take time out today and go over this Psalm and the verses in it.
Challenge
Aug. 13
In this passage, we have Jesus talking to his disciples. He is giving them a challenge, or calling, and tells them what reward would come of it. Just like today, we are quick sometimes to turn away those who are spreading the good news. I think we forget that it's not just those going door to door or standing on corners that matter. We also reject our ministers at times. Sometimes we don't even know we are doing it. We don't have to agree with everything a preacher or other minister says. However, we must support them, encourage them, pray for them, stand beside them, and try to shield them from negativity.
Jesus told the 12 basically that they would run into people who would not accept them. I also think we can see how we must continue sharing His good news. We have seen lately how some are being persecuted for what they believe or worship. This isn't anything new. We can point back to the Old Testament with the book of Daniel. This passage gives us hope of a big reward. One that is gained by knowing, accepting, and sharing Christ. When we do so, we receive the greatest gift ever given.
Worry
Matt. 6:33-34
We all have worries. Maybe it's a financial worry, a job worry, a relationship, etc. Worry never does us any good. However, it is hard for us to not worry when face to face with a problem or issue. Some will say "I worry because I care." There is nothing wrong about caring. However, our faith is weakened when we worry. It is a hard thing to overcome. I still struggle to beat it back.
Satan likes it when we worry. He likes it when we try to fix things and leave God out of it. He likes it when we worry so much it leads to other issues in our lives. This verse shows us how we must first seek the kingdom of God. It seems so easy to seek God and his wisdom before trying to put our hands on something. I continue to strive for this kind of faith. To hit my knees and seek Him first and not to worry.
We found security and peace when God sent his son. No more need to worry. When we seek God first, we have done the best thing possible.
Devo Challenge
Devo challenge!!! So a little different form today. More of a challenge. I gave the youth a quiz yesterday. Questions like: How many books are in the Bible? Old Testament/New Testament? How many authors contributed to the Bible? What are the 5 divisions of the Old Testament? What is the order of the books of Bible?
We are working on memorization and learning more about the Bible itself. So I challenged them...now I challenge you. Even with all those years of seminary, I feel I have a lot to learn. I needed a brush up on some of these questions. I'm not expecting them or us to memorize everything in 1 week. So I challenge us to know the first 8 books of the Bible in order by next Monday. Also, know how many books (66), and how many of those books are in the Old Testament and New Testament. I think knowing what all is in the Bible is important. We can't memorize every detail or word, but I think basic info like this can help us and others.
The Lord Will Provide
Gen. 22:14
This chapter is one of my favorites. Here we have a father willing to sacrifice his son as he was commanded, and because of his faith and obedience to that call, God provided him a different sacrifice. Some will point to this story and say it is a reflection of what God did for us with His son, Jesus. We can draw many similar images from both events. However, God didn't hold back His son. He provided us grace, forgiveness, and salvation. God provides.
Look around you and you can see how He still provides for us each and every day. Some days are harder than others, yet we get through and see His provision stands tall. God has provided me with so much in my life. His Son was more than we deserve, and yet He still shows how loving and compassionate He is toward us.
I look back almost 4 years ago when I dislocated my ankle. I had no income and pretty much had to lay sitting with my leg elevated all the time. However, God provided spiritual, mental, physical, financial, and fellowship needs. He continues to bless us all. Let us thank Him for his provisions--even the ones we don't expect.
Relationship
I'm sure we all have been out into a pitch dark place and looked up to see the stars. It is truly a beautiful and peaceful time to see so much light coming from above. I think it's a good reminder of what is above, along with a sunrise and a sunset. God has made some beautiful things for us to take in and enjoy.
He also gave us something beautiful with His love and His desire to have a relationship with us. God desired a relationship from us in the beginning. In the New Testament, it is God having relationship with others through His Son, to the disciples, to Paul, and those he healed and spoke to. We even see where his Son goes off to have a personal time with his Father.
Having a relationship with our Lord is still beautiful today. We can still see the stars and the things of this world He made for us to enjoy. The friendships He gives us with others. The most beautiful thing for us is to have that relationship with Him. I didn't just do these devos for others. I have enjoyed the growth I have received, the challenges I have felt. I'm not just trying to encourage you and see you challenged. I share my struggles, encouragement, desires, and hopes with you that you may gain insight and knowledge of our Lord. As I always state, I walk as you walk. I cannot achieve anything without the relationship of Christ and His grace in my life.
Comfort
Now, we can face other areas in our life where we depend on our comfort or use it to make us feel better or feel secure. I admit I have a food comfort...or comfort food problem. In it may be an issue that isn't brought out in these verses. In studying this verse I saw how Abram's country was becoming idolatrous and tempted. God was calling Abram away from his country.
I know for me there are things I turn to instead of turning to God or obeying Him. Food can be a big outlet at times when I "comfort eat". I confess to you all this is an issue. This week I have done a little better, walking everyday and not eating as much. I'm not trying to go on a super diet or become a marathon walker. I'm just trying to improve my walk with Christ first. I don't want this to be an issue or struggle anymore. I have chatted with others about this issue as well. I love food. I need prayers and encouragement to be called away from my comfort struggles. I share openly with you all and ask you help me be accountable in this. It doesn't have to be a daily thing, or even weekly. God is calling me out of that comfort. Now I need strength and a desire to be obedient to that call.
Deliverance
We have all seen the familiar quote "Professionals built the Titanic, amateurs built the ark." It is true in a sense that Noah on his own was not a professional. However, he let God work in His way and in His will. That is a lot of faith and trust in the Master Builder. Not only that, we see Noah and his family were delivered after 40 days of trial. Actually, it's a lot longer than 40 days if you count building the ark, the flood, and waiting for the water to go down. The hope we have here is that God can use us, and he will deliver us.
We all go through struggles, trails, and heartache, and sometimes they seem to last forever. We have hope that one day we will be delivered. God already delivered us from sins with the death of His son. It may not come on our time or our schedules, but He has promised us we will be delivered. We must try and wait. Psalm 46:10 tells us to "Be still, and know that I am God". What hope, what a promise we have. I am thankful he delivered us from sin and will deliver us from our struggles, pain, heartache, and illness.
Right Heart
Aug. 6th
Here, we are looking at another popular story that we have heard many times. As followers of Christ, we must seek and serve God with the right heart. In worship, prayer, service, and daily actions, we are to have a right heart. Selfish desires, envy, and pride not only hurt our walk with Christ, but they hurt others' views of us and how Christ is working in us. Essentially, the light turns to darkness. This story is a good reminder of how we need to have a right heart, especially when serving Christ or others for Christ. We must also give God our best, and He will do the rest.
Listen and Watch Carefully
Ah yes, we all have heard the story of how a serpent deceived Eve, and how the fruit looked good to eat. Listening and looking may be two of our biggest obstacles in life. Here Adam and Eve had everything one could want, and they also had talked with God. What else could one want? How could they have fallen so far?!
However, we face the same temptations and fall for the same traps. The Bible shows us many ways that God blesses us. "Every good and perfect gift comes from above" (James 1:17) is a popular verse that comes to mind. But, the world tries to sell us lies. They tell us that whoever has the most toys, the most money, biggest house, will win.
God gave us everything we ever needed and more than we deserved. Our eyes get us in trouble when we chase material things. Our ears only want to hear selfish things. I didn't even touch on the lips! So be careful who you listen to and try to fix your eyes and ears upon Jesus.
In the Beginning
The weekend has quickly come and gone, and Monday has arrived with much groaning and maybe even a desire to stay at home. I'm thankful that God has always been in the beginning, along with His son. Monday is usually the beginning of our work week. However, every day is a new day and sometimes a new beginning.
It works the same way with God. He has remained by our side from the beginning. The challenge and goal for us is to continue. Continue to let His light shine through us and let him work in us. We can't just follow Him on Sunday or when it's convenient for us. It is an everyday calling to worship, praise, grow, serve, and share in and through Christ. Our beginning is more of a continuation in our walk with Christ. Let us continue to seek him every day. Let us confess with our lips. Let us praise and thank him everyday. Let us not stop running the race or fall behind.
Still Working
Philippians 1:6
We live in a world of deadlines, goals, performances, and accountability and many other different measurements or evaluations. In our jobs, we are expected to do certain things. Most of the time it is our responsibility to complete or live up to the job description we signed up for. This verse is very encouraging in that it doesn't really need anything from us. It is a great reminder of the grace we learned about today, and the grace we see everyday in our lives.
We have all accomplished different things in our lives. School, jobs, or career, etc. We all also have faced trials and disappointments from jobs, relationships, tragedies, or anything else that has affected us. Again, this is a great verse of promise and a great reminder for us daily. We may finish or accomplish certain things in our lives, but God continues his work. He doesn't punch out, he doesn't move on, and he forgives us when we fall short.
I think we can find 3 things from this verse to take away. First, God took the initiative in starting the good work in you. He began the good work in you. Salvation must begin with God. Second, he takes personal responsibility for completing his work in you. Praise God! He takes on the burden! Third, he guarantees the outcome. Not only does God start the process, and continue the process, he also guarantees its ultimate outcome. He will “carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” This means that God won’t be turned aside by difficulties of any kind.
Paul faced many different trials, and God continued to do good work in him. Paul was a smart man. However, even he realized it was all lost, and only God could do good work through him. So let us not be discouraged when hard times come; let us not become prideful when we accomplish good things. Let us continue to let him work in our hearts and in our lives. The good work will be more fruitful than we can ever imagine.
Stumbling
Matt 16:23
You have to actually read verse 22 to get the whole context of what is going on here. When I first read this verse as a new believer, I felt bad for Peter. Why was he a stumbling block to Jesus? To me it seemed he was trying to help his friend. However, the issue was that Peter was trying to interfere with God's plan. Peter wanted his desires and will to be done for Jesus. Not God's will.
Have you ever felt that God has a plan for you or a desire from God and you ignored those plans or delayed them? God's plan doesn't go by humanity's...thank goodness!!! I mean really, do we really want our ways and plans over God's? How often do we look back and say, "Yeah God knew what he was doing?"
Some people come up with their own version of the Messiah and "coming to God" on their own terms. It can't be done. To reject the cross is to reject Christ. Christ calls us to share in His sufferings. In the very next verse, vs. 24, Christ tells us we must deny ourselves. This seems to be a theme in our devos this week. So we must be careful and not be a stumbling block as servants of Christ. We must accept his plans.
Proverbs 3:5-6 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future". I know I need to be careful of the times I might be a stumbling block to God and His glorious ways.
Spiritual Gifts
Yes. That is a lot of reading. However, I focused mostly on 12:1-2 but read it all.
What a week. VBS was awesome. You all pitched in and it was fun and exhausting. You all served and gave your time and talents.
So...wow and ouch...This is how I feel after reading and studying today's devo. I wanted to shed light on idolatry so I did a basic verse lookup and came to this one and it touches on idolatry, but that wasn't the message overall. Instead, God showed me an area that I may overlook. Here, we are warned about spiritual gifts. According to what I read, Paul is saying people were divided over who had the most gifts and who had the best gifts. It was causing strife. If you look at the love chapter and prophesy chapter, it seemed pride was an issue. So in a sense, they lost focus on the main point of spiritual gifts.
When someone does something for you, or you for them, what was the reason? At times I have heard people say "Don't take my blessing away" when they're trying to do something nice for you. Look, it's great to give and great to serve and great to use our spiritual gifts. However, Paul gives us a warning here. He is not saying don't use the gifts God gave you. He is telling us to watch our motives and reasons. He is saying that spiritual gifts exalt the Giver of the gift (Christ) and not the receiver (us). I think Paul is worried about our actions behind the use of our gifts. If we do it to feel good about ourselves or to receive a blessing then we are not recognizing God for the blessings and gifts.
I saw a quote that says "If a religious experience does not honor Christ as Lord, then it is not from the Spirit." So...yeah...I'm guilty. I love to encourage and serve and lead/teach but I often forget to exalt the One who gives me those gifts. They come from Him and we are to let His spirit flow through us into others. As we learned from VBS, grace is not of ourselves but the gift of God. So let us exalt the Giver and take our selfish reasons out of it.
Keep it Simple
James 5:13
Keep it simple.
Have you ever faced a trial or a period of storms? Do you often seek multiple opinions and thoughts? Do you seek any and all avenues before seeking Christ in prayer? Oh...I'm guilty. Very guilty. We are a "fix it now" generation. Our world and life move at fast speeds. Yet ,we still try to take control of our problems.
We can look up many verses where it simply says..."Pray." Such a simple task that we make so hard. We can go back and look at many Psalms where David cried out in prayer. Jesus himself withdraws from the crowds to go pray. We are charged with being imitators of Christ. Prayer is an important aspect of the daily walk and talk with God. Prayer is showing our faith that God will hear and answer. When prayer lacks, so does Christian growth. So keep it simple. Life is hard - we don't need to make it more difficult.
Resolution
Psalm 5:3
"In the morning, O Lord. You will hear my voice; In the morning I will order my prayer to You and eagerly watch."
Well, August is almost here. Be sure to budget more for the AC bill. Okay, this isn't a budget message, but don't forget to do it!!! We are 5 months away from Christmas and 2015. Have you ever made a resolution at the beginning of the year? Most of the time it's to lose weight, exercise more, get some sleep, maybe even travel or go on a vacation. Have you ever made one and failed? No??? Oh...uh...yeah...me neither. We probably started off good and faltered later. Ever set any spiritual goals? Read more, grow in the Lord, serve, pray...etc?
Well here, David gives us a resolution or promise. He says "You will hear my prayer." David isn't saying, "Oh for January, I will be good." He is saying, "I will talk to you in the morning, first thing."
I admit prayer isn't high on my list first thing in the morning. I admit I hit the snooze button more than I should to get that extra few minutes (like it would really refresh me). If we seek Him in the morning, He will refresh us on His own.
I also like how he says, "I will order my prayer to you." Sounds really specific. I know at times I get lazy with my prayers. I will say, "If it's your will or desire." And there's nothing wrong with that, but it's better to be more specific. Does God know the specifics of a general prayer? Of course, but praying specifically shows more faith and usually is a more in-depth prayer.
Then David closes with "eagerly watch." Wow...The amount of times I pray and don't necessarily watch eagerly for the answer is higher than I want to admit.
Be sure to resolve your day with the Lord each morning. Psalm 88:13: "But I, Lord, have cried out to you for help, And in the morning my prayer comes before you." So let our resolution or promise to God daily be..."You will hear from me in the morning and I eagerly and faithfully wait to hear from you in a specific way."

In looking up these verses, it's easy to come to the conclusion of "Oh we need to set our hearts and minds on things above." However, how often are we actually putting that into practice? I read where one person said we basically have to leave this world or quit it.
So does that mean we have to be dead? Well I hope not. I think it can tie into a little bit of yesterday's challenge of opening the eyes of our hearts. Here, we have to shut our worldly eyes and our worldly thoughts. We have to try and place ourselves above our normal thoughts and in Christ. Say what? Lets look at another verse maybe that can help us all understand more of what I mean or what God is telling me.
In Philippians 3, we find the same thought in verse 20 where he says, "For our citizenship," or our manner of living, or our life if you will, or our existence, "is in heaven." You say, "Well what are you talking about, we are not there yet?" No, but though our bodies aren't there, that is to be the occupation of our mind--the heavenlies. Remember when Jesus tells us that His kingdom is not of this world? In Romans 12, remember we are not to be transformed to this world. We must leave the world and set our eyes and minds on things above. Christ is seated in the heavens above. Our real home is above.
Now you might be thinking "What about the verses that say we need to 'Go into the world and make disciples' or 1 John 4:17, which reminds us that we are to live like Christ in the world?" Ok now we are all really confused right? How do we do both? How do we set our minds and hearts on Christ in heaven but live like Christ in the world? Your inside lives in heaven, your outside lives on earth.
I saw this comment and found it interesting... "Until a Christian in his heart and his soul and his mind has learned to live his spiritual life in the heavenlies, he will never be able to touch the earth with the truth of God. It won't happen." Think about it...when you notice a change in someone, how many times is it because they found Christ? We can only be effective if we set our hearts and minds on things above and let Christ flow through our bodies here on earth.
Complete Wisdom
Ever had to read directions to put something together? Did you actually read every step? Or did you go for it and then wonder...why do I have so many pieces left? No? Uh...me neither...
Let's face it: we have all opened our Bibles, read something, and the words sometimes just don't stick. This verse is a good reminder about how we have to let God open the eyes of our hearts so He can show us wisdom. He can also show us wisdom and prayer or service to Him and Him through us. I find when I allow His wisdom to flow through me, I gain more knowledge of Him. However, I have to let him reveal Himself; I can't do it. Ways I have found this are through studying or reading other comments on the verse or through prayer and service.
There is so much to learn. Take a hobby or job, and you have to do some of the same things. Michael Jordan got cut from his basketball team in High School but went on to become one who many believe is the best athlete in basketball, period. But he had to study, train, and mentally prepare himself.
Similarly, we must have the same attitude and passion when seeking God, and the wisdom we will gain from doing so is reward enough. I also think it's cool how Paul says in verse 18 "the eyes of your understanding." Remember Paul was blinded physically...Paul then let Christ guide Him spiritually. I once wrote a note about how sometimes we need to put our blinders on like they do horses. Then we can let God open the eyes of our hearts so we can see mercy, grace and compassion.
Worship
Read Acts 4:20. Do you worship when you go to church? Is that what's on your mind? Do you prepare your heart for worship? When you are getting dressed, or when you are in your car on your way to church, is your heart eager to worship God? Have you ever asked yourself these questions? I know this is something I need to work on in my life. Authentic worship to God. I need to focus on my worship to God, not just what I can get out of it, but how He can be glorifed and praised. That is what worship is supposed to be.
Servant of Christ
We can look in the New Testament and see all the miracles Jesus performed. It seems He had a servant heart for others. That isn't false - he did love others and had genuine compassion for them. However, Jesus did it by being a servant to God first. We are to help one another and lift each other up, but we must also remember to do it as servants of Christ first. Not for any kind of agenda for ourselves or gain. In fact, the Holy Spirit will lead you in service. In the end, we must try to please God as a servant of Christ. We must let Him work through us and for us. His name should be praised and glorified, not ours.
Even Now
July 25th
Phil. 1:12-15
Paul here tells us how, in his suffering, Christ is being preached. I think this is a good reminder that, even now, in our present troubles, Christ can be glorified.
Think about your testimony or about times God got you through a really difficult time. That is the story we usually tell people. By doing so, we are showing that, even now, Christ is with us. In doing so, we not only praise and glorify all He is doing, but others will see how our faith is strong and how loving and merciful God is.
Even now, He is pouring out His love, not just to you, but through you as well. Be a vessel and let others see His love in you. Even now.
Weakest Link
2 Cor. 12:9-10
(I will not be posting the verse in hopes you will go and look it up and spend time with Christ.)
There are days when we lack strength. Days when the waves pull us under and life seems empty. Days when we feel weak. We all have our time of weakness. Even in those times, God can use us. He never leaves us.
The Bible tells us not only do we have a Savior that died when we were at our weakest, but he surrounds us with others who can pull us up, dust off our shirts, and give a helping hand. We unify together to love, encourage, pray, or even tease. A group unified can be strong, faithful, obedient, and loving. However, if we see one is weak and don't help, we are weak with them.
We are only as strong as our weakest link. Just like a team needs unity, so do believers. Thanks for being on my team and lifting me up when I am weak.
OK
Eph. 2:8-9 "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; It is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."
Have you ever believed more in your brokenness than your security? Ever feel your past failures and sins weigh you down and cloud your vision of Christ? If you take a mirror and shatter it, you will find it's hard look at yourself through the fractures. Similarly, maybe you are holding on to something that caused some ripples in your heart. With Christ, there is grace and mercy. You are OK in all things because He is working all things for your good.
He has you in the palm of His hands. He will keep you secure and has granted you grace and mercy over the brokenness inside of you. We are OK in Him. Seek His comfort and security and rely on His strength and you will be OK.
Chosen and Accepted
Romans 8:1 "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."
Chosen
John 15:16
"You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the father in my name, he may give it to you."
You were chosen. Remember when LeBron chose Miami or when a team picks someone first based on skills or ability. This verse shows us we were picked first. We didn't have to sit out or get picked last. We are first. Even when we fail, sin, turn away, deny, doubt, hate. Whatever the issue, God chooses us. Feeling rejected, bullied, lost, sad, depressed? God chooses you. He chose you in the beginning. He chose you through the blood of Jesus. No matter what happens, you have a friend, mentor, teammate, coach, leader, forgiver, and a Savior who will always choose to love you and is always waiting with arms open for you to choose Him.
